St Thomas' Episcopal Church, Aboyne

About Us

St Thomas
Episcopal Church,
Aboyne

We are a small, friendly Church, nestled amongst trees near the centre of Aboyne in Aberdeenshire, in the North East of Scotland, UK.

St. Thomas’ Church is part of the Scottish Episcopal Church and so part of the Anglican Communion.  We are linked with the parish of St. Kentigern’s in Ballater. Our Sunday services are generally held at 11.15 am, following the 9.30 am services at St. Kentigern’s, Ballater (see Services and Readings).

Our range of services reflects the diversity of our congregation. We hold a wide variety of regular services including Holy Communion (both the 1970 and 1982 services), Family Services, and Morning Prayer (Matins). In addition we have popular special services for children, notably the Christingle and the Crib Service. We also have occasional Choral Evensongs and other special services.

We love having children in church, and they are welcome at all our services. There is a space at the back, normally with activities for them, including crayons and drawing paper. We recognise that small children find it difficult to be still and quiet, and this is not a problem. We welcome the holy chaos that can come with children being in church. We want them, and their parents, to feel comfortable with us.

St Thomas’, our main focus is not on the church building, but on the community that St. Thomas’ serves. However, we do have a lovely building which, being over 100 years old, needs a lot of care and attention. Elsewhere on this site, you can find out more about the history of our building and what we are doing to look after it.(See History of St Thomas’ Church). Whilst the graveyard section of the church grounds is cared for by Aberdeenshire Council, the rest of the grounds and the building itself is managed by members of the congregation in various ways and means (see Our Groups).

We are an ‘Eco-Congregation’. Eco-Congregation is an ecumenical programme helping churches to make the link between environmental issues and Christian faith, and respond in practical action in the church, in the lives of individuals, and in the local and global community. The programme is operated in several different countries through independent organisations. In Scotland, this is through Eco-Congregation Scotland.
